Wi-Fi security

We detect weak or vulnerable encryption, locate and remove unauthorized access points (rogue APs), and identify RF interference sources that can compromise your network's security.

What is Wi-Fi security?

Wi-Fi security is the set of practices that protect your wireless connection from cyber threats. It covers the network's physical design, security settings, allowed devices and even how users behave when they connect.
With strong encryption, unauthorized and interfering devices kept off the network, and good user practices in place, we make sure only authorized staff can access your network — and get the most out of it.

Detecting weak or vulnerable encryption

Encryption combines a password or authentication server with mechanisms that encode data sent over the air so it can't be read without authorization. Weak encryption is like leaving your front door unlocked.
A walk-through with the Ekahau Sidekick 2 is all it takes to identify weak encryption such as WEP or WPA, or to confirm your network already uses modern, secure methods.

Open

No authentication or encryption, typical of guest networks. Not recommended for business networks.

WEP

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), from 1997, is not recommended by any current standard.

WPA

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), from 2003, was a stopgap fix for WEP and is no longer secure either.

WPA2

WPA2-Enterprise is considered secure, especially combined with a strong EAP method such as EAP-TLS.

WPA3

WPA3 is the newest standard with the strongest encryption, although not all devices support it on 2.4 and 5 GHz.

We recommend reviewing the encryption type of every network at least once a year, and always after adding new devices.

Detecting unauthorized access points

Unauthorized access points — rogue APs connected to your network, or interfering devices that aren't part of your system — are a major security risk. Wi-Fi printers or TVs on the network, for example, often have weak or open security settings an attacker can exploit. Besides exposing the network to intruders, they degrade performance for every device on the same channel.
To mitigate this risk, we run periodic security surveys with the Ekahau Sidekick 2 and the Survey app. The process instantly identifies and locates these vulnerabilities so they can be eliminated.

Mitigating RF interference

RF interference comes from any wireless — but non-Wi-Fi — device operating in the same frequency bands. Wireless cameras, cordless phones, faulty microwaves, too many IoT or BLE devices, motion sensors and even signal jammers are just a few examples that can go unnoticed without spectrum analyzer data.
The Ekahau Sidekick 2 includes an industry-leading spectrum analyzer. We simply walk the site and RF interference shows up located on the floor plan in the Survey app.

Security optimization in minutes

With Ekahau Optimizer we analyze the survey data and deliver fast, specific recommendations: we check that SSIDs follow best practices, optimize management frames for security and client compatibility, and easily identify rogue or interfering devices.
By incorporating penetration test results when available, we don't just fix today's problems — we protect the network against future vulnerabilities.

Ekahau tools we use for your audit

Having the right tools is key to running and maintaining Wi-Fi networks that are now business-critical. A network isn't secured once and for all: it needs continuous optimization so new vulnerabilities don't leave it exposed.

Ekahau AI Pro
AI-assisted planning and design for reliable, secure Wi-Fi networks on 2.4/5/6 GHz. We use it to design, analyze and optimize your network before and after the audit.

Ekahau Sidekick 2
The most accurate Wi-Fi measurement device on the market, with a built-in 2.4/5/6 GHz spectrum analyzer. It's the tool we use to survey your network on site.

Ekahau Survey
Professional Wi-Fi survey app for Android and iOS, optimized for the Sidekick 2. We use it to map performance and security in real time.

Ekahau Optimizer
Analyzes survey data and detects configuration problems, with specific recommendations to simplify your network's security.
